Growing up in a small village in Maine, I took for granted the white spire of my village church, the rambling farmhouses, and the simple Victorian Era homes in my neighborhood. While studying architecture in New Orleans I was introduced to historic preservation as a movement and the role preservation plays in preserving the neighborhoods we live, work, and play in. As a child in the 1970s, I was heavily influenced by the environmental movement in Maine. I see the conservation of our built resources as another form of recycling which appeals to the Yankee thrift I was taught by my Depression-Era grandparents.
While I love the unique challenge inherent in every preservation project, the real attraction to a project for me is uncovering the story of a building and its role in the lives of its occupants in the past, present, and future. As a founding partner, I am proud that each of our firm's projects, whether restoring the last maritime signal tower, rehabilitating the interior of a historic estate, or documenting the historic resources of a community, preserves the story of our past for another day.
I received a Bachelor and a Master of Architecture degree from Tulane University and I studied architecture for a year at the Richview School of Architecture at University College Dublin, Ireland. My volunteer work as a docent conducting tours of Portland's Old Port for Greater Portland Landmarks led to serving six years on their Executive Committee, including two years as Vice President of Public Issues and two years as President. I have also been active with my local planning board and historical society.
